The performer cast as Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter adaptation has disclosed receiving threats of violence with racial undertones.

Paapa Essiedu has now disclosed that menacing communications with racial motivation followed his appointment to the Snape role.
In conversation with The Sunday Times, he related that individuals had communicated statements urging him to quit while making threats of violence.
He noted the significance of this situation, explaining that checking social media reveals messages containing explicit threats of violence. While he expressed confidence about his personal safety, he acknowledged the potential for these circumstances to deteriorate.
He stated that while he anticipates being fine, no one should face such treatment simply for performing their professional duties. Many professionals accept inherent risks in their occupations. He emphasised that portraying a character in Harry Potter should not require enduring such harassment, while admitting the experience does have an emotional impact.
He indicated that the criticism has reinforced his commitment and increased his determination to establish his own interpretation of the character.
Drawing upon childhood fantasies of attending Hogwarts, Essiedu described how providing representation for young people from similar backgrounds served as meaningful inspiration.
He expressed that this conviction meant he would not be intimidated even by those declaring they would prefer his demise over his involvement in a project he anticipates being proud of.
