Over 130 hens face slaughter unless adopted by Friday ahead of Didcot rehoming event

Published on

More than 130 former battery hens risk being destroyed unless homes are found for them this week, before a rescue initiative takes place in Didcot.

Sunday March 29 will see 285 former commercial egg-laying birds sent to new lives – provided enough kind-hearted people come forward before the deadline to give 130 of them an opportunity.

Potential adopters must register their interest by 2pm on Friday March 27 to secure one of the hens, which have spent their existence producing eggs for major retailers, a chance at a free-range retirement.

The British Hen Welfare Trust has rehomed over one million birds since 2005

Andy Hill, representing the British Hen Welfare Trust, explained that adopters frequently discover unexpected happiness from keeping hens. He described them as amusing, inquisitive creatures that thrive on predictability and are genuinely rewarding to look after. He noted they continue laying eggs occasionally and suggested spring offers the perfect timing to begin, with these birds eager for a new chapter and making excellent companions.

The birds available for adoption have reached 18 months of age, signalling the conclusion of their commercial laying period. However, with proper care they can survive for numerous additional years.

Those wishing to provide a home simply need to ensure the hens have safety, sustenance, hydration and affection.

To offer a home, people can visit bhwt.org.uk/hen-production and select the adoption option or ring the British Hen Welfare Trust adoption team on 01884 860084.

The organisation was created by Jane Howorth in 2005 and she was honoured with an MBE for her charitable efforts in 2016. Last year the charity found a new home for its one millionth bird alongside His Majesty King Charles III.
