Abingdon parkrun back after flooding as Jonty de la Harpe wins 5k

Large numbers of participants lined up in bright weather for Abingdon’s regular parkrun event.

These free weekly runs occur throughout the nation, with Abingdon’s 5-kilometre course commencing at 9am on Saturdays from Rye Farm Meadow adjacent to the River Thames.

Waterlogging of the meadow led to several weeks of cancellations, and this Saturday’s event marked the second consecutive week the run resumed.

Sheffield-based athlete Jonty de la Harpe claimed victory, completing the two-lap course in just over 17 minutes.

According to him, this ranked among his strongest performances and he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Among the competitors were Aidan Reilly and fellow members of the local Abbey Running Club.

Last May, the Abingdon event marked its 13th anniversary, with participants encouraged to appear in costume featuring themes such as Star Wars characters.

Baked goods and refreshments were also contributed by runners to mark the occasion.

Those not taking part serve as marshals, monitoring participants and offering support throughout the course. Many runners call out appreciation to the marshals as they pass by.

The parkrun concept originated in Britain in 2004 and has since expanded to encompass over 1,200 events nationwide.

The Abingdon event frequently attracts participants from neighbouring areas of Oxfordshire and further afield across Britain.
