Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir gets bat protection conditions for renovation

Conditions relating to bats have been imposed on Le Manoir, the establishment created by Raymond Blanc, as it moves forward with a fresh initiative.

While two separate applications have received approval for the two-Michelin-starred venue, planning official Adrian Duffield has specified that no construction activity may commence until documentation concerning bats has been provided, encompassing several specific requirements.

With the approval granted on Thursday 19 March, the refurbishment work will proceed this year at the acclaimed hotel and dining establishment.

South Oxfordshire District Council’s planning chief stated that no building work should commence until a Construction Method Statement pertaining to bats has been prepared and formally approved in writing by the local planning authority.

This documentation must be authored by a qualified ecologist and should outline various precautionary steps to ensure that any bats nesting on the site remain undisturbed during the construction phase.

This encompasses protocols to follow should a bat be encountered, sections of the site designated as restricted zones, and the appointment of an Ecological Clerk of Works.

The planning inspectorate also requires information regarding any pre-commencement survey, scheduling of activities, and steps to minimise artificial lighting and sound levels associated with the development plans.

Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Great Milton was established by renowned chef Raymond Blanc in 1984 and has since become one of Britain’s most treasured dining destinations under Belmond ownership.

The venue began its temporary shutdown at the close of New Year’s Day and is anticipated to remain closed until summer 2027.

Mr Duffield also attached several additional stipulations to his approval of the scheme.

These encompassed requirements that the development proceed according to the specifications outlined in the sanctioned drawings and that construction must commence within the coming three years.

Furthermore, he indicated that agreement must be reached on revised proposals for preserving the exposed pigeon holes at the renowned restaurant and hotel.

The modifications to the historic Grade II listed building will encompass changes to wall and floor surfaces, elimination of roof windows, installation of a replacement entrance, removal of the current doorway, and addition of a fresh roof access point.

The scheme involves demolishing a section of wall constructed more than a century ago in January 1908.

This forms part of the kitchen extension situated to the north of the manor building, which the application stated must be taken down to accommodate the new layout.

With the restaurant having shut its doors earlier this year, Mr Blanc posted an emotional message on social media to mark the occasion.

The 76-year-old expressed gratitude to all devoted patrons and companions who had supported the establishment through the years, recalling the enjoyable celebrations including gatherings and wedding festivities that had united people in marking special occasions.

He stated this was not a farewell but rather an à bientôt.
