A fresh appointment aims to strengthen community volunteering efforts.

One Planet Abingdon has taken on a fresh coordinator thanks to funding from National Lottery Players, with a focus on growing and assisting the volunteer scheme.

Carol Dunne, who has worked with volunteers across all age groups, has begun a one-year contract with the organisation.

Ms Dunne stated that the centre provides a wonderful venue for local residents to gather and create meaningful change for the natural world.

She noted that engaging in voluntary work supports personal health, enables people to connect with neighbours, contributes to the area, and allows individuals to pass on expertise or acquire new abilities.

She also expressed gratitude to local town councillors for their support.

Ms Dunne commented that the group appreciates Abingdon Town Council’s crucial assistance in obtaining this financial backing, and she anticipated hearing from prospective helpers as well as collaborating with the existing One Planet Abingdon group.

One Planet Abingdon provides numerous ways to volunteer, including assisting at the community café, organising repair and repurposing workshops, leading plant-focused culinary sessions, facilitating creative activities, and running programmes for young people.

Helpers can additionally participate in the centre’s Repair Cafés, which operate alongside Abingdon Carbon Cutters.

At present, preparations are underway for the upcoming sustainable clothing showcase called ‘Wear it Out’, scheduled for June.

Those wishing to volunteer may drop by the café situated under Abingdon Museum to meet staff and discuss possibilities.
