Pip Shuckburgh Great Buildings exhibition opens in Bampton Market Square

A fresh art showcase will present depictions of some of Britain’s most famous architectural landmarks.

Great Buildings, a collection by creator Pip Shuckburgh, will be exhibited at the temporary gallery in Market Square, Bampton, starting on May 2 and continuing through May 30.

The display comprises a series of oil artworks portraying manor houses and historic constructions, among them Highclere Castle, Blenheim Palace, Somerset House, and Horseguard’s Parade.

Numerous pieces have been borrowed directly from the estates themselves.

This marks the inaugural occasion when these particular artworks have been gathered in a single venue.

Ms Shuckburgh noted that presenting numerous previous creations, especially those grand residences where she could approach the canvases as though designing theatrical scenery with narratives unfolding in front, proved particularly special. She described having harboured an ambition from youth to work in stage design, a passion that has captivated her throughout her artistic career.

The display commemorates five decades since Ms Shuckburgh launched her professional path as an illustrator for Duckworth publishers and a quarter of a century since she began working with oils.

Her career commenced at 22, when Colin Haycraft of Duckworth engaged her to create illustrations for a book authored by Patrice Chaplin, who was Charlie Chaplin’s daughter-in-law.

She operated from the Old Piano Factory alongside literary personalities including Lord Deedes and Beryl Bainbridge.

Ms Shuckburgh subsequently produced artwork for Oxford University Press, The Times Atlas, the Sunday Times Wine Club, and additional publishing houses.

Her commercial partnerships encompassed the British Museum, ICI, Pedigree Pet Foods, and Vitalin.

During her years raising two children, she additionally painted tiny illustrations of birds and animals on eggshells, which were retailed through Fortnum and Mason.

She has painted wall decorations in residences across Kensington and Notting Hill and produced imitation Chinese lacquered furniture intended for the Canadian market.

Upon adopting oil painting as her medium, she became part of Prue Pardue’s C21 collective and started receiving assignments to depict aristocratic homes.

Her artistic inspirations comprise L.S. Lowry and Edward Hopper.

More recently, she has turned her attention to industrial locations and interior scenes that occasionally approach abstraction.

The exhibition is proceeding with backing from Marc and Kristy Bowles.

Throughout Bampton’s Artweeks, Ms Shuckburgh’s personal studio will welcome visitors as well.

Patrons will have the chance to purchase newer creations during that period.

Additional creative spaces throughout Bampton will also welcome guests, including the West Oxfordshire Arts Society gallery in the Town Hall, which will remain accessible throughout the month.
