Oxford criticised over alumni links to Jeffrey Epstein scandal

Published on

Oxford University is facing public scrutiny following multiple scandals linked to Jeffrey Epstein that have implicated several of its former students.

The prestigious institution, which has held the top position in global rankings published by The Times on multiple occasions, has been challenged by The Spectator over whether it bears accountability for the behaviour of its graduates.

The individuals most prominently connected to the Epstein controversy are Peter Mandelson and Ghislaine Maxwell.

Lord Mandelson studied at St Catherine’s College from 1973 to 1976, pursuing a degree in philosophy, politics and economics.

In November, he stepped down from his position as an honorary fellow at the college and was struck from the register of honorary fellows.

This decision came after full details emerged regarding his association with the convicted paedophile and financier Epstein, including during his tenure as business secretary.

Maxwell, for her part, was a student at Balliol College during the 1980s and was found guilty of child sex trafficking offences in the United States in 2022, receiving a 20-year prison sentence.

The Spectator commentary raises questions about whether Oxford specifically shapes individuals who display contempt for regulations, noting that the institution has become skilled at separating itself from its graduates.

Writer Matthew Donnelly contends that while the university bears no direct responsibility for its alumni’s conduct, it undeniably functions as an encapsulated environment.

According to Donnelly, the experience is so different from ordinary life that it is perhaps unsurprising if, for some, it causes them to lose touch with reality to some degree.

The complete commentary piece is available on The Spectator’s website.
