A local primary school has received commendation for its advancement, sense of belonging and nurturing atmosphere following a recent official inspection.

Watchfield Primary has been acknowledged for establishing an inviting setting for students from what evaluators called a distinctive and frequently changing community.

Nick Hatcliffe, the head of school, expressed pride that the inspection highlighted the inclusive and hospitable environment which makes Watchfield such a remarkable place. He noted that students originate from a distinctive and highly transient community, and ensuring every child feels secure, respected and part of the school is a priority.

The assessment, conducted under Ofsted’s updated evaluation system, determined the school fulfilled required standards in child protection, attendance and conduct, inclusivity, leadership and governance and pupil personal development and welfare.

Senior staff were commended for having responded promptly to tackle the most urgent issues, with their efforts already showing measurable results.

Improvements noted included progress in Key Stage 2 writing performance, improved attendance rates and fewer serious conduct incidents.

Activities including Arts Week, International Week and educational visits were recognised for helping students develop self-assurance and self-esteem.

Inspectors pinpointed three aspects requiring additional work: attainment, the curriculum and instruction, and early years facilities.

Efforts are already progressing to enhance reading and phonics instruction, implement consistent methods and improve the early years environment.

Richard Evans, chief executive of Cambrian Learning Trust, stated that the report reflects the robust culture of child protection, inclusivity and care that forms the foundation of Watchfield Primary School. He said they were delighted that inspectors acknowledged the swift steps leaders are implementing to stimulate improvement.
