Oxfordshire leisure centres partner with Diabetes UK for activity challenges

Published on

A fresh collaboration seeks to increase physical activity and promote improved wellbeing through countrywide initiatives.

Recreation provider GLL has joined forces with Diabetes UK for the third consecutive year to back two of the charity’s prominent fundraising and movement campaigns: Swim22 and the One Million Step Challenge.

GLL manages 19 recreation facilities and sports venues across Oxfordshire under its Better banner and will highlight the challenges throughout 2026 to Oxfordshire members to foster involvement and raise consciousness about diabetes.

Kevin Williams, partnership manager for GLL in Oxfordshire, voiced his enthusiasm about supporting Diabetes UK once more and helping additional individuals discover the advantages of becoming more active.

With millions of people in the UK vulnerable to developing type 2 diabetes, maintaining regular exercise and a healthy body weight can significantly help lower that vulnerability.

Initiatives like Swim22 and the One Million Step Challenge transform increasing movement into an enjoyable and inspiring experience while collecting money for a tremendously important cause.

GLL will share details of the challenges with its Oxfordshire members via social platforms and within its facilities.

To assist those taking part, the organisation is providing reduced-rate leisure centre memberships, complimentary training sessions both online and at venues, and advice to help individuals train securely and productively.

Swim22 invites participants to cover the swimming distance between England and France across a 12-week period beginning on March 22.

Simultaneously, the One Million Step Challenge motivates individuals to walk an average of 10,800 steps each day over three months, beginning in July.

Reduced targets are offered for both initiatives.

The goal is to encourage movement while gathering vital funds for Diabetes UK, which assists those with diabetes and finances crucial research.

James Beeby, director of engagement and fundraising at Diabetes UK, voiced the charity’s pleasure at collaborating with GLL once more to motivate additional individuals to embrace a fresh fundraising challenge.

Physical activity plays a significant part in overall health and wellness, and occasions like Swim22 and the One Million Step Challenge render participation enjoyable, attainable, and fulfilling for all.

Throughout the UK, Better leisure facilities aid their members in enhancing both physical and mental health, and this mutual objective renders the partnership particularly appropriate.

Diabetes cases are increasing in the UK, with 4.6 million individuals currently receiving a diagnosis.

Without proper care and assistance, diabetes can result in severe consequences, encompassing amputations, heart attacks, and strokes.

Money gathered through the challenges will back Diabetes UK’s research pursuits and assist the charity in enhancing care and support for those managing the condition.
