New M&S foodhall creating 75 jobs at Abingdon retail park opening April

A new M&S foodhall is scheduled to open in Abingdon during late April, according to workers completing construction at the site.

Improvements are currently being carried out at the former Homebase location at Fairacres Retail Park, where the foodhall is being established.

The retail space covers approximately 18,000 square feet and forms part of the M&S store refresh initiative.

Approximately 75 employment positions will be generated by the new outlet, with the hiring process already commenced.

Construction crews working on external paving reported an anticipated launch around late April, with April 27 mentioned as a potential opening date.

According to plans outlined by the retailer, the establishment will feature a comprehensive selection of M&S Food products, including locally sourced produce from Select Farms, affordable everyday items through the Remarkable Value and Bigger Pack Better Value collections, a prepared hot chicken section, and an in-store bakery.

A dedicated collection point will also enable shoppers to retrieve online purchases of clothing, household items, and beauty products.

Town councillor Oliver Forder suggested the new store would represent a significant development for the broader community.

The DIY retailer Homebase vacated its Fairacres location in February of the previous year, having previously occupied a purpose-built unit at the retail park in 2021.

The retail park also houses Costa Coffee and Lidl.

Paddy Sunderland, store manager at M&S Abingdon, previously indicated enthusiasm about launching the new food store, highlighting the opportunity to build a dedicated team committed to delivering an excellent shopping experience.

Local residents have responded positively to the announcement, noting the convenience of having the retailer locally rather than travelling to Didcot or Oxford.

M&S has been invited to provide further comment.
