A serious road traffic collision caused significant disruption on the M40 motorway during the afternoon.

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway at junction 9, close to Bicester and the A34 junction.

Emergency services responded to a crash involving a car and a lorry, which was initially reported at approximately 3:30pm.

The northbound exit slip road at junction 9 became blocked as a result of the collision.

According to traffic monitoring service AA Traffic News, lanes one and two were closed to traffic, with all movement brought to a standstill until around 3:55pm.

Residual delays remained substantial following the reopening of the lanes.

Although traffic began to move again, vehicles continued to queue and progress through the area was slow.

Highways staff worked to clear the scene, and the exit slip road at junction 9 eventually reopened.

However, vehicles that had been forced to stop during the incident remained stationary on the hard shoulder for some time afterward.

Oxfordshire County Council’s travel information service confirmed the exit slip had reopened by 4:24pm.

Emergency services remained at the scene to manage traffic and ensure vehicles proceeded with caution.

The collision was subsequently cleared, and normal traffic flow along the M40 northbound carriageway resumed.

Motorists were advised to approach the area with care as residual congestion cleared.
