Traffic officers responded to a collision on the A40 near Oxford on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency services attended the incident on the Elsfield Way section of the A40, which runs westbound towards Cutteslowe Roundabout.

The crash caused significant disruption to motorists in the area.

Reports indicated substantial tailbacks on the A40 at Cassington, with queuing traffic stretching for approximately two miles in both directions.

The congestion was particularly severe near Durham Lane at the Cassington traffic signals.

Motorists experienced delays extending as far as Eynsham, while traffic heading back towards Wolvercote Roundabout was also affected by the build-up.

Roadworks in the vicinity were contributing to the difficult conditions on the Northern Bypass Road near Cassington.

The AA, which monitors traffic conditions across the UK, confirmed the presence of queueing traffic on both carriageways of the A40 near Durham Lane and the Cassington traffic lights.

The motoring organisation noted that the congestion was impacting the construction zone in that section of road.

By late Thursday afternoon, the situation began to improve as emergency services cleared the collision scene.

Traffic flow gradually returned to normal levels on the affected stretches of the A40.

Officers had urged drivers to factor in additional journey time while the incident was ongoing.
